In 1992, I bought a friend a copy of the Tao de Ching. I fell in love with the text before I gave the book to my friend, and as I couldn't afford to buy another copy for myself, I copied the whole text out by hand. This morning I took that handwritten copy of the book when I went to a cafe in Beijing to meet up with a scholar of the Tao de Ching from the Beijing Normal University. The resounding 'YES!' caused not ripples but a whole tsunami of recognition!
